We woke up pretty early considering that we didn't get to sleep until 1 AM. Grandpa drove GG to the grocery store. There was supposed to be a Safeway but we couldn't find it, so we went to a LIDL instead. We dropped her off and went back to the house. When she called us on the phone we went to pick her up, but grandpa got lost. Finally we found the store and rescued GG and the food.
Our exchange host had left some milk and cereal, so we did have something while we waited.
When we got home we put away the groceries, packed a lunch and headed off to the capital area.
Grandpa found a great parking spot and spent a lot of time in enrolling in a "pay by phone" program.
We parked with a good view of the Capitol building so grandpa took some pictures. Then we walked down the long, grassy park called the Capital Mall towards the Washington Monument.
It was really hot, and we were very sweaty, so we stopped at the building called the Smithsonian Castle. This was the first building for the museum, but after a while there was so much to display that additional buildings had to be constructed. It was very cool in the castle so we took our time looking at the exhibits.
Finally we bit the bullet, went back outside into the sweltering heat, and returned to our car. Home for dinner and off to bed we went. We were all exhausted.
One thing we saw at the Castle that was impressive was a huge tarantula, at least 10 inches long and a body the size of an orange.
